Charging your EV in Amsterdam: where and what it costs

A guide to public charging in Amsterdam, one of Europe’s best-covered cities for EV drivers.

Amsterdam has one of the highest densities of public charging points in Europe. For an EV driver that sounds effortless, and mostly it is, but the city follows the same pattern as most: slower AC chargers packed into the centre, and the powerful fast chargers out at the edges. Knowing which is which saves you time.

Charge in the centre while the car sits

The inner city is full of AC chargers, often right at the kerb, on 11 to 22 kW. They are made for the way people park in Amsterdam: for hours, while you are out. An AC charger only adds around 10 to 15 percent per hour, so treat it as a passive top-up, not somewhere to wait. Plug in near your destination and the car charges itself while you explore.

Because parking demand is high, a charging bay near the centre can also be a reliable place to leave the car for a few hours, provided you check the parking rules first.

Where you charge fastest

When time is short, the quickest fast chargers sit at park-and-ride sites and along the A10 ring around the city. Here you get 150 kW and more, so you go from 10 to 80 percent in about half an hour. These are the ones to use in transit or before heading out of town.

What it costs

Prices vary by operator and by whether you pay ad hoc or via a subscription. As in most cities, parking can be charged on top, especially in the central zones, so check the signs on the spot. On a slow charger the parking can outweigh the electricity itself.

On FindCharger we show power, plugs and location for every station, so you can pick the right charger before you drive. See every charger in Amsterdam on the map, and filter by power to show only fast chargers.
